Job Description

The Campus Grounds & Landscape Manager is a full-time leadership position responsible for the appearance, functionality, and continual improvement of Glorieta Adventure Camps' 400-acre developed campus within a 2,000+ acre mountain property.

The position is responsible for maintaining over 400 developed acres of guest-facing property including athletic fields, lodging areas, gathering spaces, pathways, landscapes, irrigation systems, and outdoor recreation areas.

This role leads and develops the grounds team while providing technical expertise, field leadership, and operational oversight for all guest-facing grounds operations. Responsibilities include turf management, landscaping, irrigation systems, campus appearance standards, pedestrian snow removal, and outdoor guest spaces.

This role requires someone who enjoys developing people just as much as improving landscapes. Candidates who prefer independent work over team leadership may find this role challenging.

Your team should exceed guest expectations for the beauty, cleanliness, functionality, and overall appearance of camp while creating distraction-free environments where ministry can flourish.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Serve as the campus superintendent for grounds operations, maintaining ownership of quality, appearance standards, and execution across all outdoor spaces.
  • Maintain a constant awareness of guest experience, ensuring grounds operations support a welcoming, distraction-free environment for ministry and recreation.
  • Establish work methods, maintenance standards, and operating procedures for grounds operations. Develop and execute annual grounds maintenance plans.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and proactively identify deficiencies before they impact guests.
  • Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to established quality standards.
  • Set clear weekly priorities and adjust plans as needs change in a dynamic, guest-facing environment.
  • Prioritize projects and allocate labor resources.
  • Train and mentor grounds staff in proper horticultural, irrigation, turf, and equipment practices. Supervise and develop direct reports, including:
    • Grounds Lead
    • Grounds Technicians
    • Seasonal Grounds Staff
  • Provide regular coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a culture of care by intentionally loving and supporting staff through:
    • Birthday recognition
    • Christmas and seasonal celebrations
    • One-off acts of encouragement and care

Grounds Operations & Campus Appearance

  • Spend approximately 70% of time in the field providing hands-on leadership, support, and oversight.
  • Spend approximately 30% of time on administrative responsibilities, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain campus appearance standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of grounds, landscaping, outdoor gathering areas, and guest-facing spaces.
  • Coordinate seasonal campus beautification projects.
  • Support conference and event setup needs related to grounds and outdoor spaces.
  • Maintain outdoor signage appearance and campus wayfinding systems.
  • Maintain grounds equipment and coordinate preventative maintenance with Fleet and Maintenance departments.
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure outdoor spaces support guest experience and ministry objectives.

Turf & Irrigation Management

  • Oversee mowing and trimming operations throughout the developed campus.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems.
  • Develop and implement fertilization, aeration, and overseeding programs.
  • Monitor turf health and address deficiencies.
  • Coordinate turf renovation and replacement projects as needed.
  • Manage seasonal leaf collection and removal efforts.
  • Maintain athletic fields, recreation spaces, and other turf areas.

Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces

  • Oversee planting and maintenance of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and ornamental trees.
  • Maintain drip irrigation systems.
  • Implement weed management programs.
  • Coordinate mulching and soil improvement efforts.
  • Plan and execute seasonal color and landscape enhancement projects.
  • Manage meadow restoration, native grass establishment, and wildflower projects.
  • Implement erosion control measures where needed.

Walkways, Patios & Winter Operations

  • Ensure sidewalks, patios, gathering areas, and entryways remain clean and guest-ready.
  • Remove debris from pedestrian areas.
  • Maintain hardscape edges and gravel pathways.
  • Conduct routine inspections and coordinate minor repairs.
  • Lead snow removal and ice mitigation efforts for:
  • Sidewalks
  • Building entries
  • Porches
  • Pedestrian routes
  • Coordinate with Forestry & Fleet personnel regarding roadway snow removal operations.

Budgeting & Resource Management

  • Manage budgets, materials, equipment, vendor relationships, and contractor services.
  • Maintain documentation of work completed and future needs.
  • Monitor inventory of grounds supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements and cost savings.
  • Plan and prioritize seasonal and long-term improvement projects.

Qualifications

  • A vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in grounds, landscape, turf, park, campus, or resort management.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, horticulture, landscape maintenance, and grounds operations.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex irrigation, drainage, turf, and landscape challenges.
  • Experience serving in a superintendent, foreman, lead technician, grounds manager, golf course, park, campus, or resort grounds leadership role.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficiency in or ability to learn Microsoft Workplace, Google Drive, and Gmail.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Preferred

  • Landscape, horticulture, turfgrass, parks, recreation, or related education.
  • Irrigation certification.
  • Pesticide applicator certification.
  • Experience leading grounds operations for camps, resorts, parks, municipalities, universities, or large campuses.
  • Experience working in mountain or high-altitude environments.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation starts at $18.00/hour with overtime pay.

  • Medical coverage through CHM, employer-funded HRA, and pharmacy benefit plan - 100% paid by employer for employee and spouse
  • PTO - base amount of 20 days annually, sick leave, and volunteer time off
    Retirement - After 1 year of employment, employer contributes 4% NEC and up to 4% matched
