On a scale of 1-10, a "10" wouldn't be a high enough rating for my experience with Kevin as a career counselor. At the age of 57, I found myself desiring a career change. For several months I had sent out resumes for various kinds of jobs that looked interesting with zero responses. Kevin took me all the way back to basics, sort of Vince Lombardi's "this is a football" approach. Through personality and vocational testing, he helped me identify 3 career areas that matched my personality and interests. Then he gave me practical steps to discern which career to focus on. He guided me in how to develop relationships with people who do what I wanted to do - and these individuals have been extremely helpful to me. We then developed a resume that helped potential employers see my transferable skills and experiences. I started to receive opportunities for interviews and finally a great match with an employer. Finally, because I was blessed to be offered a position just before our last session, he guided me in giving practical counsel and materials for my first three months in my new career. In every phone session, Kevin was an excellent combination of being practical and encouraging. He had a plan for the session, but was willing to flex the plan if my situation or questions required it. He gave great advice and passed along excellent resources throughout my ten sessions with knowledge of resources that I had no idea existed. I discovered Kevin in the late 1990s. I had decided to leave my job as a Captain in the Air Force and pursue civilian life. I was working at a TV station for $5 an hour. I had a young family. I was standing at a crossroads to the future, but wasn't sure which direction I should go. I couldn't stay where I was, but I didn't want to rush down a road without considering how God made me and what calling He might have placed in my life. I don't remember how I found Kevin's career counseling program, but I remember reading something about how we spend so much time and money on education and going somewhere, but we hardly invest anything in discovering the direction we should go. It made sense, so I signed up. If I remember correctly, Kevin gave me assignments and kept in contact with me for about a year. At the end, I had a plan of action that I could fully commit to, because it was based on research, Bible study, prayer, deep thinking, and consultation. I was going to try to become a professor. It was something that I hadn't really considered before. About 20 years later, I have a Ph.D. (something I'd never imagined that I would do), and I was recently promoted to professor, which is typically the third and highest rank of professor (after assistant professor and associate professor). I've been able to raise my kids, keep my marriage intact, and find fulfillment in helping others through the work that I do. My job isn't a happy walk in the park every day - I don't think any job is. But I enjoy most days, and I am thankful and joyful to be on this path. I remember when Kevin told me that some people with my characteristics enjoy being professors, and I wasn't entirely sure whether I would. I can look back now and say, "You were right!" Thank you for helping me find a fulfilling way to serve God and others!
