Senior Pastor

Job Description

Liberty Church Macon is prayerfully seeking a Senior Pastor who loves Jesus Christ, loves people, faithfully preaches the Word of God, and feels called to shepherd a multigenerational congregation into its next season of ministry.

Founded in 1834, Liberty has deep Methodist roots and became an independent church in 2022. Although we are no longer part of a Methodist denomination, our Wesleyan heritage and historic Methodist traditions remain important to our congregation.

We are looking for more than someone to fill a pulpit. We are seeking a preacher, teacher, shepherd, mentor, and spiritual leader who will become an active part of our church and community.

What We Are Looking For

Our next Senior Pastor should have a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, a passion for Scripture and a genuine love for people. We desire a pastor who preaches the Bible with conviction, clarity, and enthusiasm and challenges people to know Christ, grow in faith, and live out the Gospel.

With approximately 100 active members and no assistant pastor planned at this time, this is a hands-on pastoral role. The Senior Pastor will be expected to know and care for the congregation while providing spiritual and organizational leadership for the church.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver biblically grounded, Christ-centered sermons with conviction and enthusiasm.
  • Teach Scripture and lead the congregation toward Christian maturity, discipleship, and holiness.
  • Administer Baptism and Holy Communion and officiate weddings, funerals, and other pastoral services.
  • Lead Wednesday Bible study.
  • Provide compassionate pastoral care, including visiting members in hospitals, care facilities, and homes.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and genuine care for the entire congregation.
  • Make evangelism, missions, and community outreach priorities throughout the church.
  • Mentor, encourage, and supervise church staff and ministry leaders.
  • Maintain open, healthy communication with staff and church leadership.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Church Council and work collaboratively on vision, ministry, growth, and other matters affecting the church.
  • Help maintain a positive, healthy, and vibrant work environment.
  • Work with staff and lay leaders to strengthen and grow children's, youth, and family ministries.
  • Partner with music leadership to strengthen Liberty's traditional and contemporary worship and music ministries.
  • Equip and encourage members to use their gifts in ministry and service.
  • Be actively involved in the Macon community and seek opportunities to share the Gospel beyond the walls of the church.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate a clear calling to pastoral ministry and a mature, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Affirm and abide by Liberty Church Macon's Doctrine Statement and Bylaws.
  • Be committed to the authority of Scripture and biblical preaching and teaching.
  • Demonstrate Christian character and servant leadership consistent with 1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:5–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–4.
  • Be emotionally and spiritually mature, humble, and teachable.
  • Have a deep love for people and a heart for shepherding the entire flock.
  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Have a heart for evangelism, discipleship, missions, and church growth.
  • Value and respect Liberty's Wesleyan heritage and historic Methodist traditions.
  • Have appropriate pastoral and preaching experience.
  • Seminary education is strongly preferred, ideally a Master of Divinity or comparable theological/ministry preparation.
  • Ordination is preferred.
