Morning Star Baptist Church

Mission Statement

At Morning Star Baptist Church, it is our mission to help every person believe in God and every Christian grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Our History

Morning Star Baptist Church was founded on June 14, 1965, by a small group of devoted parishioners (exact number to be confirmed) who gathered for worship in the home of its first Pastor, Rev. James Meadows. During these early services, the church received its name through the spiritual insight of Mother Richardson, who—guided by scripture—named the congregation Morning Star, symbolizing hope, light, and the promise of Christ.

In 1976, while Rev. Walter Stevenson was serving as Pastor, Morning Star relocated to its present home at 1257 Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan. That same year, the church purchased the property, which had formerly operated as a funeral home.

Through vision, renovation, and faith, the former funeral home was transformed into a sanctuary—symbolically shifting the space from a place of mourning into one of worship, renewal, and spiritual life.

Our Present Story

Morning Star Baptist Church is a historic Baptist congregation located in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Since 1965, our church has served as a spiritual anchor within the community, offering Christ-centered worship, sound biblical preaching, and faithful witness through service and outreach.

Grounded in the Baptist tradition, Morning Star values theological integrity, meaningful worship, pastoral care, and active engagement in the life of the surrounding community. The congregation is multigenerational and committed to walking faithfully together while discerning God’s call for the future.

Our ministry is built around 5 principles: Education, Worship, Missions, Service, and Ministry. We believe in worship. We believe everyone has a ministry, and we want to cultivate ministry gifts. We believe in making disciples and training leaders. We desire to serve at the highest level.
