The Director of Nursing is responsible for the administrative and operational oversight, direction, supervision, and evaluation of all programming that directly impact residents. Included but not limited to nursing department, social services, and life enrichment.  This role is both tactical (e.g., ensuring residents’ needs are met on a daily basis) and strategic (e.g., working with the appropriate ministry leadership, local, state, and federal agencies on future changes and opportunities).   Additionally, the Director of Nursing is responsible for:

  • Creating and sustaining an environment that humanizes and individualizes each resident.
  • In collaboration with the Day Charge Nurse, develops partnerships with the residents’ extended families and providing care that recognizes each resident’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs beyond traditional care procedures and protocols.
  • Adhere to and protect the Inspiration Ministries Mission.

The Director of Nursing will report directly to the President to provide regular strategic input in order to move the organization forward. 

Major Duties (75% to 80% of Job):

1. Resident Care

  • Oversee Nursing Department operations. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight for organizational planning, development, and implementation and follow-through of policies, procedures and state and federal regulations so the organization is in compliance at all times.  In addition:
  • Supervise nursing staff, monitor staff-resident relations, evaluate staff competence and performance, make routine rounds on units to observe, examine and evaluate resident care, and intervene as necessary to ensure high-quality resident care.
  • In collaboration with Scheduling and Training Coordinator, oversee required training for all new nursing staff, ensure continuing education and in-service training in a timely manner.
  • Ensure 24-hour nursing coverage.
  • Maintain resident/staff confidentiality.
  • Encourage and model team approach to accomplish IM’s mission of helping people with special needs thrive.
  • Leads Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program (QAPI). Track and monitor key performance indicators such as medication errors, resident falls, staffing levels, related operational, financial and Nursing Department indicators. 
  • Audit reports, records, charts for regulatory compliance, taking corrective action as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Director of People Services, provide leadership on the Safety Committee and play an integral role in the development of policies, protocols, and procedures that ensure the safety of residents.
  • Develop and promote effective relationships with other departments in the facility, staff, residents, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Provide oversight in coordination with the Resident Life Manager and Day Charge Nurse, create, implement and continually evaluate Individual Care Plans (ICP) for each resident to ensure their physical, spiritual, emotional and relational needs are met and so Community Care, or other Local, State and Federal agencies can review as necessary
  • Provide input and oversight in the creation and offering of programs and activities, which will be structured to provide residents with opportunities to become active and creative. Programs will be tailored, when feasible, around residents’ interests and limitations.
  • In coordination with the Coordinator, Life Enrichment, keep up-to-date evaluation documentation on each resident’s activities. This documentation must comply with all state and federal requirements and may contain specific resident information relating to: (1) nature of the disability; (2) activities and program participation; (3) psychological disposition and adjustment; (4) special problems or situations; and (5) prognosis
  • Lead and oversee initiatives of moving organization forward with electronic medical records system.

2. Liason to Local, State and Federal Agencies

  • In coordination with the Resident Services Manager ensure positive, productive relations with Community Care, or other local, state and federal agencies, which are responsible for residents’ physical & mental health and well-being.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key persons at the department of health and human services on both local and state levels.
  • Be proactive on local, state, and federal programs that might be a strategic fit for Inspiration Ministries.
  • Ensure residents have access to external health care services by maintaining positive relationships with primary care physicians, medical specialists, dentists, optometrists, mental health providers, etc.

3. Emergency Preparedness and Safety

  • Ensure a culture of safety, which includes addressing unsafe actions, immediately fixing unsafe conditions and educating staff regarding these. Coaches staff to put into place interventions specific to residents to prevent further incidents.
  • Provide or oversee emergency and standard precautions training of IM staff.
  • Responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or disaster situations.

4. Leadership:

  • Plans and completes duties with minimal direction from supervisor.
  • Works collaboratively with peers and other team members.
  • Uses tactful, diplomatic techniques when communicating.
  • Follows up with appropriate staff, resident, or other individuals regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.
  • Maintains all certifications required for employment.
  • Ensures and maintains confidentiality for all residents.
  • Participate in leadership strategic planning meeting.

5. Registered Nurse On-Call

  • Acts as an on-call resource on a rotating schedule.

Minor Duties (20% to 25% of Job):

  • Demonstrates a desire/willingness to help residents when needed (but also encourages them to be as independent as possible).
  • Attends/participates/Leads in staff meetings and staff chapels.
  • Lead mandatory monthly scheduled in-services and other resident care meetings as requested
  • Identify and pursue partnership opportunities with organizations, businesses and agencies whenever possible.
  • Coordinate the development of and maintain adherence to the yearly operating budget with each department head under the direct supervision of this position.
  • Participate in ministry functions as a volunteer being present at all key functions
