The Christian Grads Fellowship, a ministry of Grad Resources, is a network of Christian graduate community groups whose goal is to impact the academy as thoughtful and informed followers of Christ. The Christian Grads Fellowship practices a “catalytic model” of ministry. This model leverages online resources, local partnerships, and distance coaching of volunteers to serve campuses. Crucial to the model’s success are motivated and effective coaches. The coach is responsible for supporting the growth of existing fellowships and starting new campus groups. This individual serves as the main point of contact with student leaders, providing pastoral care, training, and ministry supervision. The coach relies heavily on remote tools (phone, Skype, email) with occasional in person visits.
The ideal candidate must be aligned with the mission and values of Grad Resources(www.GradResources.org) and The Christian Grads Fellowship(www.ChristianGrads.org). The ideal candidate should exhibit the following characteristics:
1. Expertise in campus ministries
The coach must possess cultural fluency within the university and be able to lead a ministry within that context. The following is a non-exhaustive sample of some mission critical activities for the coach:
Anticipate the needs of a particular campus fellowship and inject guidance accordingly
Identify, recruit, and motivate student leaders
Pastor a student through the typical spiritual, emotional, and academic challenges of grad life
Quickly assess a campus for its potential for a grad fellowship
2. Entrepreneurial skills and spirit
The coach must operate as if they were constantly starting new ventures. The Christian Grads Fellowship seeks to expand significantly in the near future on to new campuses; even maintaining existing fellowships requires steady entrepreneurial energy because so many students graduate each year.
3. Ability to track multiple entities
You will be responsible for tracking 15 campus fellowships, each at varying stages of development. Each fellowship will involve tracking multiple contact points (student leaders, students, faculty sponsors, administration, etc.). The individual must have the ability to oversee this diversity, track the next action step for each fellowship/student leader, and document progress for management.
4. Gifted in persuasion
In distance coaching, the coach possesses almost no formal authority over students or any other kind of leverage. Persuasion is the primary tool. Coaches must be able to start with the varying motivations and values of students and creatively align them with the mission of the organization. Candidates must be able to relationally connect from a distance and develop rapport that demonstrates the value of a continuing relationship. Coaches will be asked to direct students to the CGF approved curriculum.
Vibrant personal relationship with God and an active member of a Bible based church
University, church or other ministry experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (graduate degree a plus)
Demonstrated excellence in organizational and managerial skills
Recognizing the unique demands of school and life placed on graduate students, Grad Resources provides online materials, meaningful connections, engaging speakers and supportive faith-based communities that enable students to flourish personally and professionally.
Our desire, since our founding in 1990, has been to integrate the heart and mind of Christ into their lives.
Broadly speaking, we do that by providing a) practical services that help graduate students navigate their time and experience in school, and b) faith-based communities and resources that help Christian graduate students impact their academy as thoughtful and informed followers of Christ.
From its inception, Grad Resources has operated as a faith-based organization with the conviction that spiritual health is significant to an individual’s overall well-being. While Grad Resources continues to offer its services free of charge to any individual regardless of religious affiliation, in 1998 the organization began developing and expanding local community groups known as Christian Grad Fellowships where graduate students could safely discuss and study the role of faith in their academic pursuits and lives.
Campus programs are executed onsite by a volunteer student leader and professors who serve as resources for the student leader. Grad Resources serves, supports, and coaches student leaders, and is very involved in leadership succession as we vet and select new leaders for each campus, typically one year before the current leader graduates.
This volunteer-led model (versus a staff-based model) allows the ministry to quickly establish a presence without requiring having to recruit a full-time, onsite ministry representative. Costs for maintaining a fellowship are almost non-existent, allowing the ministry to rapidly scale.
