Director of Music Ministry

The Director of the Music Ministry is to minister to the participants of the music ministry and the congregation through the use of appropriate music and musical programs to proclaim the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. The position is part-time requiring approximately 15-20 hours per week.
Primary Duties
Spiritual and Personal
1. Continue growing in Christ’s likeness through personal spiritual development.
2. Seek involvement in, not leadership of, a small group Bible study or ministry.
3. Be a disciple of Christ, a knowledgeable teacher of God’s Word and lives a lifestyle in harmony with the Holy Scriptures.
4. Develop professional skills through relationships with other Music Ministers and through continuing education opportunities as appropriate.
5. Maintain positive and cooperative relationships with the church staff and lay personnel promoting the concept of team ministry.
6. Attend all worship services of WIUMC and promote the spiritual life of the congregation and its members through the Music Ministry.
Musical
1. Work with the Pastor to plan, promote, choose, prepare and present music for Sunday worship services, special seasonal services, and other music events.
2. Lead and direct all musical activities in the church for each service.
3. Lead and direct the Chancel choir and Handbell choir(s), and other vocal and instrumental ensembles to include weekly rehearsals.
4. Play organ, piano, guitar, etc. for all congregational worship services.
5. Serve as leader in Worship giving direction to the congregational singing, choir and other parts of worship.
6. Recruit, train and equip volunteers who lead and participate in children’s or youth choirs, ensembles or solo work to maximize the number of musical opportunities in the church.
7. Coordinate all music activities with Pastor, Children’s Director and Youth Director, or worship committee and keep accompanists and audio-visual personnel informed far enough in advance for smooth implementation of plans.
8. Maintain a broad-based involvement with laity of the church.
Administrative
1. Attend staff meetings as directed by the Pastor.
2. Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office. Experience with Media Shout is desirable.
3. Submit articles for weekly bulletin and newsletter, web site, and church social media to keep congregation informed about the Music Ministry.
4. Develop and submit an annual budget for music ministry to the finance committee for consideration.
5. Oversee maintenance of music library, materials, supplies, musical instruments, and other materials used in music ministry.
6. Coordinate with administrative assistant to maintain all licenses and memberships for the legal use of materials in worship services and other events.
The Director of Music Ministries is accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee, under the supervision of the Pastor.
Experience and Training
Undergraduate degree preferred, with a major emphasis in music desirable. Prior experience as a director of music in a church desired. Familiarity with a variety of worship styles within United Methodism including traditional and contemporary desired.
Pay and benefits
This will be a part time hourly position with a weekly average of 15 – 20 hours. Pay and benefits are negotiable based on experience. Must pass a background check and a drug test.
