POSITION SUMMARY:
The university safety officer serves to assist higher command and is responsible for the general protection of the community and the campus facilities. The officer may serve as an on-site supervisor or watch commander, and will patrol the campus to pro-actively remove opportunities for crimes to occur.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Performs physical security checks of campus facilities, ensuring facilities are in used by appropriate personnel.
2. Observes, reports, and identifies persons involved in suspicious activities or manners. Ensures that unauthorized persons leave the university and community.
3. Enforces university policies, regulations, and municipal, state and federal laws. Assists local law enforcement as necessary.
4. Conducts thorough investigations as assigned and completes detailed reports as to those investigations. Participates in crime prevention programs.
5. Assists Student Life and Residence Life personnel as required. Provides on-campus escorts to university students and personnel as requested.
6. Performs other duties as deemed necessary under the guidance of the Chief, via Chain of Command.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education: High school diploma; Bachelor’s degree or 60 units of college preferred. Reserve Level II Police Academy Certificate or equivalent experience. Required certification: Guard card, tear gas, collapsible baton, 1st aid, CPR, and AED. The guard card, CPR, 1st aid, and AED must be in possession at to the time of hire. Tear gas, and collapsible baton certification required within the 1st month of employment.
Minimum Experience: Completion of a Reserve Level II Police Academy Certificate, equivalent experience, or ability to complete the above class. Must possess a current CA driver license have no criminal record. Previous college or university law enforcement experience preferred.
Skills: Ability to relate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and the public. Demonstrate leadership qualities with the ability to teach required skills. Must posses and maintain a clean and valid California Driver License.
Mental Demands: Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail. Able to exercise independent judgment and discretion; problem solving. Ability to perform under pressure. Physical Demands: Must be in good physical condition. Able to walk long distances, bicycle, run, climb, stoop, bend, stand for long periods of time and life heavy objects (50 lbs.) over head. Hearing and speaking demands. Possess the physical strength to restrain, control and handcuff a combative person. Be able to adjust to varied work shifts.
Visual Demands: Computer monitor, reading, inspecting.
Environment: Pleasant office setting; varied weather condition when involved in outdoor activities.
