>>The Best and Worst Jobs of 2015

Every year CareerCast.com puts out their list of the best and worst jobs of the year.  They evaluate jobs on factors such as work environment, stress, and the hiring outlook.  The top job this year is "Actuary."  A description of this job from the ONET (www.onetonline.org) says that actuaries "analyze statistical data, such as mortality, accident, sickness, disability, and retirement rates and construct probability tables to forecast risk and liability for payment of future benefits."   While this job pays well and has a great job outlook, it would poor choice for people who don't have the interests, skills, motivations and personality traits to do this work.

"Firefighter" is on the list of worst jobs.  The CareerCast.com report states, "firefighter is one of lowest-ranked jobs due to high stress, low pay and long hours."  While much of this may be true, it doesn't mean that this could not be the right fit and God's calling for a given person.  A teacher provided the CareerCast.com information to a student interested in firefighting  and for him "the report only motivates him more because he knows how important firefighters are to their communities, and that he better follow that path since others may not due to the report's negative findings."

While these types of reports can be one factor in career decision making, if they become the driving force in making choices this can lead to a person ending up in work that is dissatisfying and a poor fit for who they are.  Factors related to the work environment, stress and the job outlook are very important, but they are secondary questions. The most important question is, "How well does this type of work fit my God-given design?"  If you are unsure about the type of occupations that would best fit your skills and interests, and are interested in career services you can schedule a career services consultation for an analysis of how our services can help you find career and financial success.
